THE FORGOTTEN SCARLATTI pre-concert talk with Dr Geoffrey Webber (30 mins)
Amongst the roll-call of famous baroque composers we often hear the name ‘Scarlatti’. The keyboardist Domenico Scarlatti was born in 1685, the same year that Bach and Handel were born, and his father Alessandro was one of the leading composers of vocal music of the day. But the musical dynasty was much wider than just these, with both male and female members of the family working as musicians, often with colourful personal lives. This short talk introduces Francesco Scarlatti, who spent his final years in England and Ireland, and also investigates the fascinating nature and history of his unique polychoral masterpieces – the Mass and Dixit Dominus.
