Malvern Theatres Young Company present:
Oscar Wilde’s
The Importance of Being Earnest
Adapted and directed by Nic Lloyd
Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest is a biting satire on manners, matrimony, and misbehaviour in Late-Victorian high society. The play inverts everyday values that contribute to its comedic and thematic weight. First performed in 1895 and subtitled ‘a trivial comedy for serious people’, The Importance of Being Earnest remains amongst our most popular and enduring comedies.
Following their five-star production of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood (2019) and powerful staging of Sophocles’ Antigone (2018), this young and talented company return in 2022 with Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. This 90-minute dramatisation by director Nic Lloyd highlights the talents of seven young performers as they bring to life the writing of this timeless literary classic. All of the author's wit and sarcasm is retained, poking fun at conventionally serious topics such as love, death, and religion, which continues to charm audiences more than 100 years on.
Established in 2012, Malvern Theatres Young Company formed under the initiative to provide young people with an inspiring and unique experience, nurturing the next generation of creative talent. The company perform in Malvern every summer, on the site of the famous Malvern Festival founded by George Bernard Shaw. Returning for the third time, they present their fifteenth production to the Edinburgh Fringe at theSpace UK’s Upper Niddry Street venue.
“I sat in awe. Much talent here for London’s West End from these actors.” Audience review on Under Milk Wood, 2019.
“This young company demonstrates the strength of theatre by allowing the beauty of words to shine through, powerfully engaging the storytelling on and around the stage”
