KING JOHN TO MAKE ‘CAMEO’ APPEARANCE IN KING JOHN

A historically and culturally significant production of King John commemorating the 800th anniversary of his death will be staged around his final resting place in Worcester Cathedral 

Coming exactly 800 years – to the day – after his death, the Worcester Repertory Company are staging a culturally significant production of William Shakespeare’s King John in front of his chosen place of rest, The Quire of Worcester Cathedral.

This historically significant production can quite rightly claim to be unique and of cultural importance, as during the performance the cast will address the actual tomb of the fallen King.

Cultural Significance
There will not be another opportunity for such a marking of anniversaries for another 100 years, making this a genuine once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate the work of Shakespeare and to commemorate the passing of one of the most controversial monarchs of Medieval England, whose reign was fraught with espionage, subterfuge and political machination.

In a year that has seen commemorations marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, this play, which was written by the Bard 400 years after the death of Kong John, will open with a performance on October 18th 2016, exactly 800 years on from the night of his death.

A First For Worcester
Until the recent discovery and reburial of Richard III, King John was the only British Monarch to be buried outside of London. This is the first ever production of King John to actually feature the King’s final resting place, and does so with the full backing of The Dean Worcester Cathedral, who will himself be making an appearance in the play.
