Free Radio supports giraffe art trail
A radio station is on board as media partner with a major giraffe-themed art trail arriving in Worcester this summer.
Free Radio, which has a studio in Worcester, has partnered with Worcester Stands Tall to promote the showcase alongside the trail’s other media partner – the Worcester News.
Worcester Stands Tall will see 30 8ft-tall, decorated giraffe sculptures displayed through the streets and public spaces of the city for 10 weeks from Monday, July 9 to Sunday, September 16.
Alongside the large sculptures will be 26 smaller giraffe calves, decorated by schools and community groups and displayed in Crowngate Shopping Centre.
Tom Newitt, who presents Free Radio’s breakfast show, said: “I’m really excited about seeing all the giraffes and bringing my little one along to the trail. She is four years old and is a big fan of giraffes!”
The trail is an event by Wild in Art – the company behind recent showcases such as The Big Sleuth in Birmingham – and is brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice.
Known as Hursty, Richard Hurst – who presents the station’s ‘Home Run’ drive-time show – said: “It is probably one of the best things Free Radio has been involved with in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
“It is such a great idea that will grab everyone’s attention and the fact that it is helping one of the city’s great causes makes it even more exciting.”
The large fibreglass sculptures will be auctioned in October to raise funds for the hospice’s Build 2020 Appeal.
The appeal aims to raise the final £1.4m needed to build a bigger hospice, enabling more patients and families to be cared for in Worcestershire.
The total cost for expanding and redeveloping the existing building in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, is £5.3m.
Sara Matthews, Project Manager for Worcester Stands Tall, said: “We’re so excited to have the support of Free Radio for our art trail.
"We know we can count on the team to help us ‘have a giraffe’ this summer, while helping spread the word about our hospice giraffe trail as far as possible!”
