The Greatest Show heads for Worcester!

It’s the final countdown to the city’s unmissable Worcester Show!  Here’s a flavour of what’s on offer.

This popular annual event, which attracted over 10,000 people in 2017, is coming back to Gheluvelt Park, Barbourne on Sunday 12 August (10.00am – 5.00pm).

One of the highlights of the event will be the judging of 120 competitive classes, which range from growing a wide variety of fruit and vegetables to displaying flowers and floral decorations, creative handicrafts, art, baking and modelling.  There are many classes for under 18s and a new giraffe-themed photography class, to coincide with the Worcester Stands Tall (www.worcesterstandstall.co.uk) public art trail.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming people from far and wide to our fun and action-packed family event,” says Gerry Leith, Chair of the Worcester Show.

“It’s all about celebrating the county’s creative talent, enjoying some great music, food and drink, and trying something new.”

Food and drink galore!

Don’t miss demonstrations at the Henley McKay Live Kitchen, from Maggie Rose Cakes, gourmet burger star Carl Sampson, vegetarian cookery experts from Sheela’s Kitchen and Our Lizzy.

Locally cooked produce on offer – from bhajis to burgers and beer, curries to cocktails, pizzas to pulled pork and Prosecco.

There’s also a huge range of stalls selling handicrafts, confectionery, preserves, take-home food and representing a wide range of local groups and charities. 

Get active at the Worcester Show

The Sports Zone will offer plenty of activities for all ages.  Worcester Wolves will be running activities on the Basketball Court alongside the Worcester Tennis Academy, which will be running coaching sessions.  Local firm Redpoint are erecting a climbing wall and there will be Martial Arts demonstrations – with lots of opportunities to have a go too!  Barbourne Bowls will also be present, with their outdoor bowls mat.

Last but not least, don’t miss the annual penalty shoot-out, with trophies on offer for the different age groups (and one for Mums too!) and the tug-of-war.

Kid’s Zone

Children will love trying their hand at water zorbing, bungee trampolines, an inflatable slide and bouncy castles, provided by Boing Entertainment.

New for this year will be short workshops run by Dancefest and the Worcester Woodland Archers will be teaching you how to shoot a long bow!  Have your face painted, enjoy a pony ride, hone your bushcraft and survival skills or take part in the Duck Race on the Brook, hosted by the Worcester Lions Club.

Fun Dog Show

Local vet firm MacArthur, Barstow & Gibbs are running a fun dog show at the event.  Judges will be looking for the best veteran, best biscuit catcher,

dog with the waggiest tail, and much more!  You can register your dog for an event on the day - £2 per class. 

Music and entertainment

Enjoy the sound of Partyband, guaranteed to have you on your feet in next to no time; Secret Cabaret, performing classic hits from the 1950s;

enjoy the strains of community choir Got to Sing, or move to the pulsating beat of Drumlove.  Last but not least, be hypnotised entranced by the belly dancing of The Severn Sirens.

Expert advice on hand

This year, nine societies will be at the Show – including the National Begonia Society, the Worcestershire Camera Club, the South Worcester Bonsai Society, the Worcester Society of Artists and the Worcester Beekeepers’ Association.

Transport and parking

If you’re coming to the Show by bike, you can store it securely for free at the Push Bike! stand next to The Pump House Environment Centre.

If you’re coming by car look for the signs directing you to the Pitchcroft car park.  From the southern end of the city you’ll be directed through the Swan Theatre car park onto Pitchcroft.  If you’re coming from the northern end then it’s via Sandys Road, Pope Iron Road and Waterworks Road.  The car park will be open from 8.00am to 6.00pm and parking is £3 per vehicle with a portion of the money raised going to the Worcester Samaritans.

There’s still time to enter one of the 120 classes via the website, but hurry!  The entry deadline is Monday 6 August – apart from the photography classes, which have an earlier deadline of 5pm on Wednesday 1 August.  Entry to all classes is free.
