New signage will help tourists make the most of Worcester

The TIC adjoins Worcester’s Grade I listed Guildhall, but its entrance is tucked away to the side of the main entrance, and is not visible from the High Street.
 
A temporary sign has been in place on its High Street façade for the last six weeks, while a permanent one was being made.
 
“There was an immediate and noticeable increase in numbers visiting our TIC from the first day that the temporary sign went up on the High Street,” says Worcester TIC Manager Ruth Smith.
 
“We have a wealth of information and advice on the Worcestershire area to offer visitors, and I’m particularly pleased that the new signs are in place for this busy festive period, when so many people will be spending leisure time in this historic city.”
 
The Guildhall’s listed status places restrictions on adjustments which can be made to the building’s exterior.  However the City Council’s Planning & Conservation Officer, Dr Paul Collins, noticed on archive photos that a sign had previously existed on its façade.  Further investigation revealed that Listed Building Consent would therefore not be required for new signage.
 
Located on the corner of High Street and Copenhagen Street, the former sign directed people to the fire station which was previously in the vicinity.
Holes where the sign was previously hung were identified, and a local blacksmith was commissioned to forge an iron bracket on which to hang the new permanent TIC sign, which was erected yesterday.
 
A second prominent sign has been placed on another façade to the side of the TIC’s entrance – again on the site of a previous noticeboard.
