Students Celebrate First Class Honours

More than 300 students will graduate from the University of Worcester with First Class Honours this autumn.

A total of 335 students secured the top classification in their degrees and will graduate during a week of celebrations at Worcester Cathedral in November.

Among them was mature student Linda Pike, from Bredon in Wychavon, who studied for a degree in History.

“I am really thrilled to be awarded the classification of First Class Honours because if you are going to embark on a course later in life, you want to do it the best you can,” said 62-year-old Linda. “It is something that I would not have been able to do without the support from my family, especially my husband Chris, who has just about got used to me being buried in piles of books and paperwork in the dining room!”

Linda studied for her degree part-time over six years and is planning to continue her studies with a postgraduate degree starting this autumn.

She added: “If anyone else is thinking of embarking on academic work at a later age I would not hesitate to recommend the University of Worcester for the help and support it gave and I only wish that I had done it earlier for the enjoyment it has given me and the friends I have made.

“Whilst initially apprehensive that I may be the oldest in the class, there were also a few other mature students present and I was fortunate to be a recipient of an Academic Scholarship. Returning to classes after a long absence also enabled me to interact with younger students, who always made you feel welcome, and could contribute a different perspective in classes.”

Also to achieve a First was Lukas Vaiciulis, from Lithuania, who studied for a BA (Hons) in Sports Business Management.

“I feel extremely pleased to achieve such a great result after all the hard work during the three years of studies,” said the 21-year-old. “With English being my second language and having to adapt to a different culture and environment after arriving in the UK, I never expected to do so well in my degree. I am very thankful to the University of Worcester for all the support they provided me with and for allowing me to gain the knowledge, improve and grow as both a professional and a person.”

Lukas has now returned to Lithuania, where he has joined the Global Lithuanian Leaders organisation and become a Public Relations and Communications Co-ordinator.

“I hope this will provide me with an opportunity to further develop as a professional and gain an invaluable experience,” he said “I am then planning to come back into education and start a Master’s degree.”

The University of Worcester has places available for well-qualified applicants through Clearing this year.

The Clearing hotline – 01905 855111 – is now open for those collecting BTEC results and Access qualifications and will remain open as A-level results are released on Thursday, August 17th.
